Out of everyone who made this year’s track team, only two players will be competing competitively in pole vault. One of these players is none other than the 5’7 freshman: Sam Turner.
Turner started doing track in seventh grade by recommendation of his cross country coach, Coach Ward. He started out running 400s, 800s and 4 by 8s. He only branched out to pole vault last year.
”[My best is] 9 foot,” Turner said.
Around the same time Turner tried pole vault, he was diagnosed with ADHD. It explained a lot about his struggles in life.
”I can’t sit still or focus that well, but that’s what sports helps with,” Turner says.
Turner has many friends in track, but he would consider Jason Hess to be one of his closer ones.
“Jason and I push each other because we’re the only two that do [pole vault] consistently,” Turner said.
Turner’s favorite part about track is the difficulty.
“If it was easy, it would be boring,” Turner said.
