Sophia Burton, freshman, is the Creative Director for The Occurrence. Burton learned about the staff from her 7th grade yearbook advisor and decided to join for a few reasons.
“I like representing people. I like talking to people. I like telling them stories, since I never got to tell my own, and I don’t want people to feel how I did,” Burton said.
She loves helping people, but that caused her to struggle last year.
“I would try to help everyone and I would never get my homework done, which was really bad,” Burton said.
Burton handles the stress of life with a couple of techniques.
“First I freak out, like a normal person, and then I realize I’m getting nothing done by freaking out. So then I take a breather, drink a lot of water, go to the bathroom, and then I will chill out,” Burton said.
For Burton, being a good leader calls for a lot of things.
“I like to lead by example. If I am not doing more than you, I am not a leader. If I work hard, people are more likely to work as much as I do. I also like to admit when I do not know the answer, but that can be the hard part of leadership,” Burton said.
In her free time, Burton loves to do poetry and enjoys learning about philosophy.
“I like when you have to think about things. That’s the reason I like philosophy. It can be interpreted in different ways. I’m kind of a thinker,” Burton said.
