Archie Hay only comes to work on Wednesdays and is often caught napping in his office, but he isn’t being fired anytime soon. Archie is Jason Hay’s 2-year-old golden retriever and certified therapy dog.
Archie started visiting school in November of last year as the first therapy dog in the district.
He travels around to wherever he is needed.
“He loves ‘good boy,’ and any kind of praise. He is very very sensitive and doesn’t do well when you get on to him,” Jason said.
The Hay family has always wanted to have a therapy dog as well as a golden retriever.
Archie started training when he was 6-months-old for his certification, and it took him six months to finish training. In training, Archie had to do a temperament test which measures their hostility and friendliness around others.
It also tests their impulse to protect the handler. The test could take place in a park full of people doing their daily activities or any busy public area. Not at all dogs pass the temperament check, which is another reason why Archie is perfect for this role.
Archie is not the only furry friend in their household, they have an Australian Shepard named Hollybell and a cat named Bobby.
According to Jason, Archie is a very energetic and active dog and must be exercised often to be properly stimulated. Archie loves playing with his toys. His toys of choice are a tennis ball, rope, chew toys and rawhide. But his favorite toy of all is squeak toys; Archie specifically likes to rip the squeaker out of the toy.
Kelly Hay has given Archie the title of “goober” owing to the fact that Archie is skilled in the art of somersaults. Kelly says that Archie will either do it on purpose or accidentally.
Archie finds that the most comfortable position to chill in is laying on his back with his tongue out. Out of the two, Kelly says that Archie favors her more since she is more laidback.
But Archie’s overall favorite person has to be Hay’s son, Spencer. They have both formed a special bond since the day they met. The Hay family loves their Archie and are proud of the service he does for the district.

I learned that Archie is a therapy dog. The strongest and most interesting part is that I didn’t know he was in training for six months.
How did they pick Archie, what made him stand out from other golden retrievers. A future article that could be done could be; would there be more animals included in the district, like if there would be another therapy dog.

I didn’t know that Mr Hay had 2 more pets besides Archie. When I heard that Archie was scared of getting and in trouble but loved be praised it surprised me. You could tell who was the trainer who trained Archie to give him the credit.

I learned that Archie was training for 6 months to become a therapy dog. The strongest and most interesting part of the article is that he favors Hay’s son more than anyone. Why did you decide to have a therapy dog? Some of suggestions are maybe talk more about how he became part of the family?
Tyler • Mar 26, 2024 at 3:05 pm
I did not know that Archie was a therapy dog

I didn’t know that Archie was 2 years old or that Mr. Hay had more than one pet. That most interesting part of the article is when they talk about Archie’s favorite person.

Reading this article I not only learned that Archie was not only Jasons Hays dog but he has two other pets. The part I found most interesting is how it tells you so much about the service dog Archie. One unanswered question I have is what made Jason Hay want to get a golden retriever and service dog? As a suggestion for a future article I think reading a story covering the Art Club and their best works could be quite interesting.

This Article was amazing, it was well written and very neat. This was super interesting because I never really knew anything about Archie and now I feel like I know everything. I love Archie and in my opinion he relates very much to my dogs.

I didnt know that Archie was the first therapy dog in the district; i was honestly sure that there had been more animals but apparently not! I love having information on Archie, and this article has tons of it! It’s very nice to hear more about him.

I loved that this article is about Archie, Archie is a really amazing dog. It is cool that Archie had to train and it only took him 6 months to finish. It could have included what Archie does when he is not working
Aidan • Mar 26, 2024 at 10:10 am
I didn’t know Archie had to go through 6 months of training to be a therapy dog I liked that i got to learn about Archie and his adventure to becoming a therapy dog.

I learned that we have a therapy dog that comes every Wednesday. the most interesting part of the article is that he is the first therapy dog in the school district. A question I have is where did he get Archie trained at. I think that in the future you should do some interviews with students and teachers on how they feel about Archie
Gavin • Mar 12, 2024 at 12:22 pm
This is a fun article to read about the dog.

I was surprised to learn that Archie is the first Therapy dog in the district, I really liked and really enjoyed that i got to learn about Archie’s. Home life . I think a good idea would have been to get quotes from other students and peers on their opinions on archie . I have a 1 year old German shepherd named Loki and he also really loves squeaker toys , he likes to rip up the toy until he finds the squeaker . I was shocked to see the similarities between the two . A question I have is Where was Archie trained at? I would love more articles on Archie .

Overall the article is good, well written, and tells you all the things you’d want to know Archie. I think that Archies inclusion in the school has been nothing but positive and has benefited the school in many ways. Sometime all it takes to make someone’s day better can be as simple as seeing how happy others are and how they derive joy from just being alive. Didn’t know he was 2 years old though, if you were to ask me how old I thought he was I would have guest somewhere around 4 to 6 but not 2 so that’s something I learned.
Carter • Mar 7, 2024 at 2:35 pm
I learned that archie like tennis balls. The most interesting thing about the article is that it takes 6 months to finish the training to be a tharapy dog. Why did they want a tharapy dog? To show places to send your dog to be a tharapy dog.
Madison • Mar 7, 2024 at 2:31 pm
It was interesting to learn Archie’s favorite things and how old he was, the most attention grabbing part had to be about his favorite toys. I would like to know more about his certification as a therapy dog. I also think adding in students feelings about Archie would be good so everyone can have a student connection.
Tyler • Mar 7, 2024 at 2:08 pm
I didn’t know that came to school on Wednesday. The interesting thing about this article is that i didn’t know that Archie naps in Mr.Hay’s office. I would really like to know if Archie could come to days a week
Silas • Mar 7, 2024 at 1:56 pm
I loved this article because it talks about Archie and Archie is a really kind dog. The most interesting thing about this article is that it talks about how long it took him to finish his training and it talks about his favorite toys. But the article could have talked about how he is around kids that are petting him or if he ever losses ficous and what he likes to do on his own time when he is not working.
Morgan • Mar 7, 2024 at 1:53 pm
I learned that he is a therapy dog, i like that they include his home life where was he before he became a therapy dog? where did he get certified

Archie is the first therapy dog in the district
I liked that they included Archie’s home life and his past
Where did Archie get his certification?
Include students opinions about Archie and quotes from them

I enjoy Archie’s company, he is very nice. Has he every work some where else. If he has write a story on where he worked and what it was like
Leelana • Mar 7, 2024 at 1:24 pm
It was nice to read about Archie’s life, and training, how he became a therapy dog. I learned a lot about him I didn’t know, however I would like to know if he went to any other schools or places before Mr. Hay got him.
Justin • Mar 7, 2024 at 1:23 pm
I find it enjoyable knowing we have a therapy dog, I’ve only seen him a couple times, it’s great to learn what all he does!
LaKaylee • Mar 7, 2024 at 10:15 am
I enjoy Archie’s company, he’s so sweet. Has he ever been to any other schools? The next article should be about how he is in a different school. I never knew that he trained for 6 months.
Ashley L. • Mar 7, 2024 at 10:09 am
It was to fun to learn what Archie does throughout his daily life and how he became a therapy dog. I really liked learning about Archies favorite toys and his favorite person within his home. I would love to know more about Archie and how he makes others feel when he comes to the school. Maybe next time you could interview some students and see what they think about Archie when he comes to school.
Aiden • Mar 7, 2024 at 10:05 am
I really like Archie, but I never knew that Spencer was his favorite person. I have a Border Collie that also likes to lay on her back with her tongue out as well, so I was able to relate to that. I wonder if Archie knows any tricks or whatnot, I think the students at Bryant would like to see that. I would like to see another article about his home life or the different schools he visits.
LaKaylee • Mar 7, 2024 at 10:04 am
I enjoy Archie’s company he’s very sweet. Has Archie ever been to any other schools? I didn’t know his favorite toy was a squeaky toy. Another article about Archie could be how he acts in a different school.
Audrey • Mar 7, 2024 at 9:11 am
I love Archie, he is a very good therapy dog and it was fun to know how he became and trained to be one was interesting. Maybe another article on a day in the life of archie at our school or if he goes to any other schools.
Taylor • Mar 6, 2024 at 3:04 pm
I love when Archie comes to school so to hear about his journey was really inspiring. I found it funny though that he likes to lay on his back with his tongue out, because my black lab does the exact same thing. I would’ve liked to hear about Archie’s little brother who is also a golden retriever. He is a newer addition to the family so I understand why he is not in this article, but I would like to see a future article about the little sibling.
Nicholas • Mar 6, 2024 at 3:03 pm
I learned that Archie’s favorite person is their son Spencer. I find the most interesting part is that he loves his squeaky toys. What type of squeaky toys does he like? A suggestion is that to give more evidence about the person/thing. But overall a great article.
Taylor • Mar 6, 2024 at 2:58 pm
I personally love Archie when he is at the school so to get to learn more about him was amazing. I found it funny that he lays on his back with is tongue out, because my black lab does the same thing. I would like to hear more about how Archie’s little brother who is also a golden retriever. He is a newer addition to the family so I understand why he isn’t included in this article, but I would like to see an article later on about the little sibling of Archie.

I honestly loved the article, especially the part where Archies family life is told. It was very inspirational to know that he went through special training and that he is the first therapy dog in our district.I also like how the article isn’t just about how he is a therapy dog and that when he is at home he gets to be a normal dog.
Humairah • Mar 6, 2024 at 9:59 am
I loved the article and the tricks he knew that were mentioned were really cool. It was nice to know what kind of training he went through and how he helps us. He is also very sweet and patient, so I agree he’s the perfect dog for the job, plus such a cute dog and I love petting him. It would be cool to know more examples of how he works, though 🙂
Crissy • Mar 6, 2024 at 9:57 am
Archie is wonderful and helpful service dog. I love how he is doing his jobs and loving being around children. I wonder what other schools have Archie been to other than bryant? How about doing a article about Bobby
