Man of many bands

Jones participates in multiple in-school, out-of-school bands

Canaan Jones–a freshman at our school is known for his part in our honors band, our Jazz band, and even the Bryant legacy marching band, enjoys playing in the band, but the school bands weren’t enough for him. Jones plays in more than three bands outside of school, and even started when he was in sixth grade.

When Jones became truly invested in the band his parents knew that they should get him a drum set but that not it Canaan’s dad also let Canaan use his guitar leading to him learning that too.

“So I’m in two home bands that I do at home bands that I do at home, and the other two are like, one is like I go to this music school its where I take lessons, Jettway performance they have bands there that play, and I have some duo projects with some some people”, Jones said.

In almost every band including school bands he plays drums, but in one he is a guitarist.

We saw one of his bands in the 2024 talent show, and this year we will see his second band at the 2025 talent show. The downfall of garage bands is evident but people like Jones keep the garage band tradition alive.

“One band it’s mostly in my garage, home bands in my garage. Sometimes I come over to my friend’s house to work on some smaller things, but if it’s something at the music school I go to, to take lessons we have practice at the building”, Jones said.

While many choose to join a band just to learn an instrument, Jones likes to play in his bands for a whole other reason.

“ first of all, it’s fun, is the first thing, second of all there is so many relationships you develop that you didn’t realize you could have with these people, like musically it’s like communication, there’s a connection between”, Jones said
