Governor Sarah Huckabee-Sanders has passed hundreds of new laws since January. Many of them will impact students.
Act 621 will excuse any student that misses school to attend their parent/guardian while they vote.
Act 788 otherwise known as the Religious Viewpoint anti-discrimination Act will allow students to express their religious opinions in any of their work, like homework, artwork, or other assignments without being discriminated against.
Act 317 bans transgender students at public schools from using the restroom that matches their gender identity. Jason Hay, principal, says that the school will follow the law, but that if a student is uncomfortable with that, they will have access to a single stall bathroom.
Act 542 bans schools from requiring teachers to use a transgender student’s preferred pronoun without written permission from their parents or guardian.
The Learns Act allows teachers the minimum of $50,000 salary, also requires students not reading on grade-level by the third grade to be held back, and it makes stricter reading requirements for students because they want all students to succeed academically.
School choice Bill gives students the choice to access quality education, no matter where they live.
The School Choice Bill gives students the choice to choose the school district they attend, no matter where they live.
The school district is responding to the many laws.
“We are training teachers about laws. It won’t change day to day.” School attorney Jeremy Lasiter said.
Lasiter says the impact of the laws won’t be seen completely for a few years, but the goals of the school and district remain the same.
“Our main goal is to take care of kids.” Hay said.
